About UCC
Upstate
Coalition of Compassion is a not-for-profit, volunteer organization open
to persons of all ages, ethnicities, faith traditions and walks of life.
We are united by our commitment to non-violence and by our compassion
for the Iraqi people, particularly the many thousands of innocent civilians
whose lives have been devastated by the current conflict. Our
hearts are especially moved by the suffering of children, who make up
nearly half of Iraq's population. As early as 2004, UNICEF
reported that 1 in 8 Iraqi children were dying before the age of 5, the
victims of severe malnutrition, contaminated water, a collapsing public
health system and, of course, gunfire and bombs.
Today, with violence
at much higher levels and most humanitarian groups gone, these
conditions have only grown worse. With deep sadness, we acknowledge
that many more Iraqi children are likely to die before peace is restored
and that those fortunate enough to survive will carry the physical and
emotional scars of this war throughout their lives.
If
you are moved by the plight of Iraqi children and eager to make a difference,
we invite you to join Upstate Coalition of Compassion. With
help from the humanitarian organization
No More Victims, UCC is working to organize local medical sponsorships
for Iraqi children who have been injured in the war. No More
Victims will provide research and international contacts and arrange
travel to our area for children and their guardians. UCC's job is
to raise funds, secure pro bono medical services and offer the
warmest possible hospitality to our guests.
